PLUS HERE’S SOME INSTRUMENTAL
STUFF:
(Most of this is pretty old,
but it’s a chance to hear something a little different than the recent Black
Lab Trio stuff – Though the original incarnation of Black Lab Trio was
instrumental.)
I’LL
REMEMBER APRIL – THE VIDEO
Warning: This one is a huge 65 MB .wmv file.
MY
FUNNY VALENTINE (trio, featuring Bryan Sorum on Trumpet)
I wanted to do something a
little different with this well-worn standard, so I tried a quartal harmony
approach on the comping and tried to keep a really tight quasi-latin feel. Bryan’s playing is just stellar!
HOW
HIGH THE MOON (trio, featuring Bryan Sorum on Trumpet)
This is one of my early attempts at recording.
BORNMAN'S
FUNK MIX
This backing track was posted
on rec.music.makers.guitar.jazz by the incredible jazz guitarist Richard Bornman
for members to take solos on and share with the newsgroup. This was my
interpretation -- a little different than my usual stuff: I did kind of a
bluesy Stevie Ray Vaughn type thing on it.
Solo
from "CHESTNUTS" a/k/a THE CHRISTMAS SONG
This one was originally a
backing track for a vocalist. It’s a bit different than the other one, which
was a duet – Different key, for one thing. It’s one of my favorite solos that
I’ve recorded.
WAVE
(duet)
INVITATION (trio, featuring Bryan Sorum on Trumpet)
This was right around when I
started playing guitar again after I quit playing guitar for 8 years. I also was just
starting to learn how to record, so the recording quality is absolutely
abysmal. Can’t say much for the guitar I was using either: Some kind of
Ibanez Artcore thing that never sounded quite right to me. My playing on it
sounds abysmal to me now, but Bryan did such a beautiful job on the trumpet
that it shines through everything else.
HOW INSENSITIVE (Yep, that's me on harmonica)
Recorded this before I started
really playing guitar again. I could almost play harmonica then. I recorded
the guitar track with a $99 guitar I had just bought just to mess around on –
at that point I didn’t think I was going to seriously play guitar or even music
again.
THE CHRISTMAS SONG (duet with bassist Bob Neale)
SCHROEDER
(with Midnite Walk) [guitar enters at about 1:06 into song]
This kewl tune was written by Midnite
Walk’s Bill Busch. They were even kind enough to keep this solo on their CD
;-)
